Preserving Mid-Century Character

A guiding principle throughout the Canyon Lane remodel was preservation. Original mahogany doors, closet doors, casings, trim, and built-in elements were restored rather than replaced, maintaining the warmth and integrity of the home’s mid-century roots. Original hardwood flooring was refinished, and architectural features such as slat walls and partition elements were celebrated as focal points.

Modern updates were introduced with intention—enhancing function while allowing the home’s original character to remain front and center.

Kitchen

The kitchen is an entertainer’s dream, effortlessly combining mid-century modern charm with contemporary luxury. Custom cabinetry paired with honed black quartz countertops creates a bold visual statement, while a full-height pantry offers generous storage. High-end appliances, a Venetian plaster range hood, and a full tile backsplash add depth, texture, and warmth. Every detail was thoughtfully curated to honor the home’s 1961 roots while delivering a functional, stylish kitchen designed for modern living.

Coffee Bar

A dedicated coffee bar was created as a natural extension of the kitchen, featuring matching cabinetry and a countertop-to-ceiling tile backsplash. Floating shelves provide space for beautifully displayed coffee canisters, sugars, and baskets for additional storage—blending everyday function with elevated design.

Living Room

The living room is a harmonious blend of mid-century charm and modern elegance. Anchored by one of the home’s two fireplaces, a floor-to-ceiling fluted tile statement wall adds drama and sophistication. Abundant natural light highlights refinished hardwood floors and original mahogany doors, while a matte black tiled hearth introduces striking contrast.

Dining Room

The dining room combines mid-century character with modern sophistication. A sculptural dining chandelier serves as a focal point, while the original mahogany partition wall adds warmth and architectural interest. A built-in hutch, updated with matte black hardware, provides functional storage and a beautiful backdrop for entertaining.

Primary Bedroom and Bathroom Suite

The primary suite offers a seamless indoor-outdoor retreat with direct access to the backyard. Original wood flooring and fresh paint create a calm, inviting atmosphere, while a custom walk-in closet with a fully customizable system from The Container Store provides thoughtful, functional storage.

The renovated primary bathroom features green tile, warm brass accents, and a spa-like walk-in shower—designed to elevate everyday routines while remaining timeless.

Upstairs Hallway Bathroom

The upstairs hallway bathroom blends style and function with a modern interpretation of mid-century design. A sleek floating vanity anchors the space, complemented by dramatic large-format black tile flooring. The tub and shower are clad in fluted, wood-look tile, while floor-to-ceiling large-format terrazzo tile and a mix of matte black and champagne brass finishes create a bold yet timeless statement.

Downstairs Bathroom

The downstairs bathroom exudes bold yet timeless elegance. Matte blue Edward Martin Palmer tile sets the tone, while a glass shower panel with satin brass clips adds a refined, elevated feel. Champagne bronze Delta fixtures bring warmth, and large-scale terrazzo flooring introduces texture and visual interest. A walnut floating vanity and custom vent covers complete the space with thoughtful, high-impact details.

Downstairs Living Room

The lower-level living room was transformed into a cozy, design-forward space spanning nearly 300 square feet. The original brick wood-burning fireplace was refreshed with white paint, while existing white and brass flush mounts were preserved. A walnut tongue-and-groove floor-to-ceiling slat wall creates a striking focal point—concealing a speakeasy-inspired hidden door finished with a brass pull from Rejuvenation.

Speakeasy

Designed as the ultimate entertainer’s retreat, the speakeasy features walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Sweet Rosy Brown, creating a bold, moody atmosphere. A brass fluted glass semi-flush mount casts a warm glow, complemented by champagne bronze hardware. The ceiling is wrapped in traditional plaid wallpaper, while a marble countertop and freestanding wine fridge make the space both stylish and functional.

Record Player Nook

A cozy record player nook was carved from leftover closet space in the lower level. Featuring matching cabinetry, floating shelving for vinyl storage, a brass globe light, and a rotary dimmer, the space adds personality and function—perfect for slowing down and enjoying the home.

Laundry Room and Mudroom

The laundry room was designed for both function and style. Custom cabinetry in Benjamin Moore’s French Press provides rich color and ample storage, while brass hardware and walnut paneling tie the space to the speakeasy and the rest of the home. A built-in bench off the garage creates a practical mudroom landing with a custom cushion, cozy pillows, and under-bench storage baskets.

Hallway and Transition Spaces

In the hallways and transition areas, minimal updates were made to preserve the home’s original charm. New baseboards and updated light fixtures provided a clean, cohesive finish, while an original hallway hutch was restored for linen storage. A repurposed glass-pane door from a historic project was installed at the backyard entry, adding character and history.

Exterior Spaces

Outdoor spaces were designed as an extension of the home’s living areas. A new deck and built-in firepit create inviting zones for gathering, while drought-tolerant landscaping and modern paver walkways offer low-maintenance beauty. Subtle exterior lighting enhances the backyard from day to night.
